America Reads
Tutoring Program

America Reads is an initiative set forth from President Clinton's "Call to American Education" to have all elementary students reading at a grade level by the third grade. The program was developed out of a concern for the large number
of  young people who are currently struggling without basic reading skills. In a 1994 national assessment 44% of all fourth graders failed to read at grade level. America Reads encourages colleges and universities to place federal work-study students in the community as reading tutors to work with children in preschool through 6th grade. Student tutors work with children both one on one and in small group settings on a variety of educational activities to help students improve their reading and writing skills. By providing elementary students with individualized attention and tutoring, along with

parental involvement and quality school instruction, the program strives to improve reading levels among participating students.

IUPUI signed on to the America Reads Challenge in the spring, 1997. Since the inception of America Reads at IUPUI in the fall,1997, the program has more than doubled in size. During 1997/98 school year 35 tutors were placed in 8 community sites. The 2000/2001 program increased to 69 work-study students at 10 community sites or public schools. The tutors provided one-on-one tutoring to 350 K-6 youth supplying over 750 hours of tutoring each week totaling more than 22,500 hours of tutoring during the academic year.
